Age and Gender of Teams & Coaches:
Boys' 13’s A’s
The boy’s team is coming off a successful season with the Silver Championship from the Gateway Regional.  The returning coaching staff of Tom Stremlau, Sr., Andy Bersett and Tom Stremlau, Jr. are dedicated to helping the young players develop good volleyball technique that will build a solid foundation for their volleyball future and teach it in a fun and positive atmosphere.
Tom Sr. is CAP I certified and starting his 7th year with the club and has coached youth volleyball for the past 15 years, starting in boys’ programs at the CYC level and continuing with boys’ teams for St. Louis VBC and Genesis.  Andy began his volleyball-playing career in 1993.  While playing high school volleyball for CBC (’99-’02), his teams earned numerous trips to the state finals.  He returned to CBC as the JV Coach for this past high school season.  Tom Jr. got his start in volleyball in 1989 and has extensive coaching experience with youth teams and has attended several clinics.  In addition to IMPACT certification, he also holds a US Soccer “F” coaches license.
The coaches are committed to coaching volleyball in a fun, and positive manner.  They are seeking self-motivated, interested players with a positive attitude who like to compete against the top clubs in the area.  They anticipate playing in numerous local and two out of town tournaments, with the goal of playing in a national tournament at the end of the year.
Girls' 13’s Angels
The 13’s team will be coached by Jim Dirkers and Ken Krus.  This is their second year with this team. Jim has coached volleyball for 16 years, 11 years at the CYC level and 6 years with club teams.  He is CAP I certified.  He will be assisted by Ken Krus, co-director of the club.  Ken has coached multiple youth sports and has assisted with volleyball for several years.  He is IMPACT certified. The coaches are looking for girls with positive attitudes who not only want to better their skills, but also believe in the team concept.  Girls who are willing to become students of the game while having an enjoyable experience.  The team will practice twice a week and play in 2 to 3 tournaments a month, at least one of them being a national qualifier.  Their goal is to be very competitive and play in a national tournament at the end of the season.
Girls’ 14’s Angels
This is a new team with 8 to 9 spots available.  The coaches will be Mike Gorla, Mark Sicking and Sarah Walter. Both Mike and Mark have completed Levels I and II of the USA Volleyball Coaches Accreditation Program (CAP), and are members of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.  Mike and Mark have competed against each other the last 5 years, coaching rival teams, and are looking forward to working together. This will be Mike’s 7th year coaching for the Angels and 9th year coaching club volleyball.  He just completed a successful 6 year run with the Angels where he coached the same team from age 13 through age 18.  Mark has coached with Team Momentum the last 5 years, advancing with his team from age 14 through age 18.  Like Mike’s Angels teams, Mark’s Momentum teams were very competitive, winning a number of tournaments.  Sarah, a Rosati Kain graduate, played for the Angels for 6 years.  She was a 4 year player at Rosati Kain as a setter, and currently attends Maryville University.  This will be Sarah’s first venture into coaching.  Sarah is a good person with a wonderful attitude.  She relates well to younger players, and will be a good role model. The coaches are committed to teaching volleyball in a fun and positive way.  They are looking for interested players with a positive attitude who like to compete against good competition, and have fun while doing so.  Their plan is to play in at least one national qualifying tournament and, hopefully, a national tournament at the end of the year.
Girl’s 16’s Angels
The 16’s team will be coached by Ron Kohring and Sonya Lopez.  This is Ron’s fourth year with the team and he is Impact certified.  Ron has had successful coaching experiences in multiple sports including soccer, basketball, softball and baseball at both the CYC and club level.  The Club is proud to announce that Sonya Lopez will be joining the 16’s team this year.  Soyna has vast volleyball experience as a player in the St. Louis area including four years at Bishop DuBourg High School, two years at Meramec College and two years at Greenville College.  While at Greenville, she helped coach middle high age girls.  We are looking for dedicated hard working players that equate fun with team success first and a personal level second.  We will practice two nights a week and participate in twelve or more tournaments during the course of the season.  Three tournaments, one of which will be a qualifier, will be out of town.

We have experienced much success in recent years.  Last season we had multiple teams finish in the top five at Regionals with the 171 and 161 teams qualifying for USAV Nationals in Minneapolis, MN.  In 2007 our 171 team continued its participation on the Open level at Nationals finishing 13th and our 161 team finished tied for 3rd in the National division.  In 2006 our 161 team became the 1st team in club history to qualify for the Open division.  In recent years we had a National Qualifier Champion in Baltimore, Maryland, and two in Dallas, Texas. In 2005 the 141 and 151 teams earned 5th place finishes at the USA Junior National Volleyball Championships. In 2004 our 181 team won the National Club Division title at USAV Nationals while the 161 team placed 3rd.  In addition to the above mentioned accomplishments, teams traveled to Indiana, Texas, Kentucky and Maryland last year.  Individually, many girls have received recognition as having been named All-American at the National Tournament. In addition, in 2006 we sent seven players to National High Performance Camps and Michelle Bartsch made the USA Youth National Team winning a gold medal.

Our goal is to develop the strongest teams possible in each age group, enabling us to compete in both "Open" and/or "Club" divisions at both qualifying and national tournaments.
At the same time, our 10 & under girls program is strictly focused on player development. Our goal here is to introduce athletes to the sport of volleyball while teaching basic skills in an atmosphere of fun and sportsmanship. (More information below.)
Awards and Honors Achieved by Club:
The St. Louis CYC Volleyball Club has competed successfully at the highest levels locally, regionally and nationally for more than 20 years. Our awards and honors include numerous Gateway Regional Gold Division Champions, AAU National Champions, Asics Junior National Champions, USAV Qualifier Champions and USAV Junior National Champions. Additionally, many of our players have been recognized for outstanding play by being named to All-Tournament Teams and named as Tournament MVPs. Many former players competed or are currently competing at the collegiate level (NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA) on scholarship.  Eight players from our 2007 17-U team have made commitments to D-I colleges. Seventeen players from our 2007 18-U teams are currently or will be attending college on volleyball scholarships. In the 2007 season, St. Louis CYC VBC had 13 of 16 eligible teams qualify for the USAV Junior National Championships (the most in the Gateway Region).  CYC sent a girls’ team to Nationals in every age group and in four age groups both our 1st and 2nd teams qualified.  At the JNC, our 17-U girls placed 3rd in the Open Division.  In addition, 13 of our 19 teams medalled at the Gateway Regional Championships, including four 1st place, four 2nd place, and four 3rd place finishers in the Gold Division.

St. Louis CYC Volleyball Club - 10 & Under Program
As a developmental program, proper techniques are emphasized. In addition, a low player-to-coach ratio ensures a high degree of individual player attention. This program, now in its eleventh year, has been well received and very popular. Participants wishing to tryout for the 10 & under program need not have previous volleyball experience.  Info about our 10-U program can be found here: http://www.stlouiscycvball.org/home/CYC/PDF/200810UINFO.pdf

Budget and Expenses Information (excludes 10-U program):
- An initial payment of $300 per player (11U-18U) is due at the Club Registration Meeting (held within one week of tryouts). This money will be used for player, coach and chaperone USAV registrations and background screens, tournament entry fees, gym rental, coaches' reimbursements, administrative fees (postage, office supplies and expenses), and equipment fees (balls, carts, first aid kits, etc.).
-  Uniforms must be purchased separately and include jerseys and/or t-shirts, shorts, and a warm-up suit (approximate cost $100-$200, depending on age group).
- Each player will receive an invoice approximately every 4-6 weeks throughout the season detailing incurred expenses, projected team expenses and fundraising credit earned. At that time an additional payment ranging from $100-$400 will be due. The amounts of the additional payments are based on the projected costs for each team through the end of the season. (A team meeting will be held to choose the amount and type of travel tournaments for the season.) Total seasonal expenses per player can range from $400-$1900, depending on the frequency of practices, amount and types of tournaments entered, number of out-of-town tournaments, and participation in fundraisers.  The biggest expenses are the costs related to travel tournaments.  Payments will be collected throughout the season with the intention that each player's account is paid in full before the 2008 Gateway Regional Tournament.  Travel, food, and lodging expenses for player and family are NOT included in the totals above.
- Individual player’s money is NOT used to support or supplement other teams within the Club. Teams are self-sufficient. Teams/individuals may voluntarily participate in fundraising activities that can substantially reduce the player’s total expenses for the season. Fundraising money earned by individuals will be credited to that player’s account approximately one month after the credit is earned.
- Any money remaining in a player's account at the end of the season will be refunded to that player.
Tryout Information:
Please check the girl's tryout page for specifics.
- St. Louis CYC offers FREE online registration for tryouts.  This will reduce your wait time the day of tryouts.  Visit our web site at www.stlouiscycvball.org for more information.  Follow the step-by-step instructions to complete your registration.  Online registration is a convenience for you, not a requirement.
- If online registration is not used, both required forms (USAV Junior Tryout Waiver and St. Louis CYC tryout form) are available on our web page to print and complete in advance.
- All participants will be charged a $10.00 tryout fee
- A parent or guardian signature is required on the USAV Junior Tryout Waiver.
- St. Louis CYC does not grant age waivers in any age group. Please refer to the USAV guidelines for the Junior Age Definitions for the current season.
- Please contact us in advance if our tryout time conflicts with or overlaps another tryout that you would like to attend.  We will work with you to provide an alternate time if possible.  It is our belief that players should have the opportunity to tryout for more than one club if desired.

Please check the girl's tryout page for specifics.
We offer free, optional pre-registration by e-mail for tryouts. Players may simplify the registration process and avoid the need to stand in a long line at registration or spend time completing on-line registration forms. Please e-mail the following information to Kevin Nelson, Club Director, at 1Volleyball@sbcglobal.net, by noon of the Friday preceding the tryout you are attending: Name/Address/Phone Number; Date of Birth and Current Age; Team for which you are trying out; Parent's Name(s); Height, and whether you are Right or Left-handed. We will complete your Powerhitters' information sheet for you. You will receive a return e-mail confirming your registration. Pre-registration is NOT required, and no penalty will be imposed for not registering in advance. The purposes of this process are to make it easier for players to register and to assist the Club in organizing for tryouts.

Please contact us if our tryout conflicts with or overlaps another tryout you would like to attend. To promote the game of volleyball, we believe that players should have the opportunity to try out for more than one Club. We will attempt to accommodate you, if possible, by having you attend a tryout with a different age group. We believe, however, that it is to your advantage to try out with players of your own age. This allows you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills, and provides the Club with the best opportunity to compare your skills with players of a similar age.
In addition to their birth certificate, all players need to complete and bring to their tryout the 2008 USA Volleyball-Gateway Region Junior Tryout Registration & Waiver Form. A parent's or guardian's signature is required for all players under 18 years of age. This Individual Registration Form may be downloaded from the Gateway Region's "Publications" link. There is a $10.00 per player tryout fee. Powerhitters' players will register and pay Club fees, select and pay for uniforms, and receive other information at a required player's and parent's meeting on the Monday following the tryout for their age division. The meeting for Boy’s 13’s and Girl’s 11’s, 12’s and 13’s teams will be held on October 29, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria at Oakville Middle School, 5950 Telegraph Road, St. Louis, Mo 63129.
